Working on 3D update

My drawing guy in Thailand just sent us these 2 “pictures”, incorporating the wider boat deck, featuring a tender crane, a different helicopter (Eurocopter AS350) and the Maglift stabilizers below.

Once we have the interior defined we can work on that too in 3D and start creating some really cool fly-through’s.

By the way, there’s something wrong in this picture. Do you spot it?

Crew spaces

It’s amazing to see the kind of spaces crew on some mega yachts have to live in. Having worked as crew myself, we’re trying to find an acceptable compromise. This post is meant to gather some feedback from crew and yacht designers and have them share their thoughts on our crew spaces.

Below 2 drawings showing the crew quarters in respectively the aft and fore of the vessel. We have planned a few changes including adding a dumb waiter covering 3 decks in the galley and extending the galley by removing the office but other than that and regulatory-mandated changes that might be needed, this is the plan.

May 2009 update
See our updated general arrangement in PDF here. The office will go to make a bigger galley (see post here) and the dummy waiter shown on the May plan will also go to provide more space and equipment in the galley. Hey, we all want to keep the chef happy right?

Let us know if you find it an improvement. Not all the quarter will meet the future ILO180 guidelines (7 m2 per cabin, 1 crew member per cabin, all cabins aft) but the cabins and crew mess are all above the waterline and have port holes and/or skylights.

By the way, the idea is that this ship can be managed by a knowledgeable owner couple and a crew of 2 if needed but we also want to be able to go away for a week with 24 friends. The crew cabin all the way in forward would be for occasion ‘crew’ like guides or other temporary visitors . It’s not intended to be used during a transatlantic voyage in the fall !!

Stern thruster(s)

One of the things we’re going to add is a stern thruster. Due to the relatively small rudder, the prop effect is not that big and moving this big buy in small quarters can be a challenge. Especially when most marinas or docks where we might go are not built to receive a little bumb or pull from a 700+ ton ship.

We looked at several options so here’ the most complete list of links to professional bow/stern thrusters on the Internet . We saw the exciting van Velden EPS thrusters, the Brunvoll line of ‘silent’ thruster (very interesting reading by the way), Verhaar Omega thrusters and Schottel (nice stuff) but in the end we decided with our pocketbook and get a used Pleuger tunnel thruster (by Promac), 150 HP model. Since we keep our 375 HP generator, we can run both bow and stern thrusters at the same time.

But in the end we decided to keep it simple – and affordable and go with this used bow truster.

December 2008 update

We just uploaded our most recent general arrangement drawing. The main changes are updates to the distribution of the rear crew quarters, the galley, the bridge and the bar behind the bridge. A dumpwaiter will be included to serve 3 decks. We also added a bathroom for the crew in the forward area, enlarged their messroom and put in a few other minor changes. We’ll probably will enlarge the 30×60 cm oval windows in the guest staterooms but are studying related class requirements on this topic.
All in all, we’re quite happy with the functionality, practicality and use of space. A lot of people have given feedback and suggestions and this is the final result. Our interior designer is now detailing the staterooms and we’ll have some changes to the bathrooms as these will be prefabricated ‘wet cells’ but these will only improve the situation and make maintainance even easier.April 4
At this point we are pretty much past the design stage as far as distribution of spaces goes. We had some extra work to do as ran into issues with MCA damage stability rules and had to move our forward engineroom bulkhead aft. This will cause a lot of extra work but the great side-effect is that we get more space for our guest rooms. About 45 cm (1 1/2 ft) more lenght for each guestroom.

Our general arrangement plans (December 08 version) can be seen in PDF format and AutoCAD. A more detailed drawing of the stateroom deck made by our interior designer is also available in PDF. A construction drawing (current situation) is also available. This is our line plan of the front and side and we also have our shell expansion plan (showing thickness of hull plating) available in PDF-format and AutoCAD.

Technical drawings & globalization

I may have said it before but I think realizing this project without the Internet would be a lot more difficult, time consuming and expensive. Let’s make a trip around the world.

The ship’s hull was built in Poland. The ship was equipped in the Netherlands. I live in Panama. The ships designers recently had some old drawings converted into AutoCAD by a company in India. My 3D modelling is done by a Swiss /British guy who uses labor from Thailand. My own piping diagrams are put into AutoCAD by a guy name Hai in China and the conversion will take place in Colombia. The survey company is probably American or German. And we all stay in touch through e-mail.

Simply cool!

Plans update & a spa

We just got an update with the spa and seating on the top deck. The photo above gave me the idea. Willem Kramer at Herman Jansen BV put it on paper.

We’ve also decided to put the sewage treatment plant in the space below the guest cabins. This will allow us to use gravity for our gray water system. The toilets will continue on a vacuum system. Our watermakers will also be placed in this area and SCUBA air compressors. Also incorporated is a watertight door to the sonar room. This room is currently accessible through the forward engine room but since we’ll have guestrooms here in the future, making the entrance here allows us access without having to make complicated access doors below carpets. From this space we’ll also make access to all the forward fresh water tanks (35 m3 / 9160 gallons), eliminating to tanktop accesses that would again end up in stateroom.

3D renderings

With the new general plan almost finished, we’re now starting to put our vessel into ’3D’. First they converted the so-called line plan of the hull into a computer file. Next, they started adding the info of our 2D plans.

This is a first render, obviously unfinished, by the company Tec-art doing the work. We look forward to seeing more of their work.

Eventually, we’ll have an animation you can move, zoom in- and out and of course with more detail.
